Gunungkidul is one of the counties whose territory is included in the Karst Mountains Region Sewu with a unique landscape. Based on the book "Cultural Heritage Mosaics Yogyakarta" compiled by the Yogyakarta Archaeological Heritage Preservation Hall, Cave Rancang Kencono is parallel to the ancient cave Cave Braholo Rongkop contained in the District, it's based on the discovery of artifacts and bones are estimated to live in thousands of years ago . The cave, which has a spacious and airy room with klumpit tree (Terminalia edulis) are estimated to have more than 2 centuries-old was once used as hideouts and meeting Laskar Mataram when putting together a plan to expel the Dutch from the Sultanate Ngayogyakarta.
